Arkhangelsk region is the land of rich and diverse impressions with a northern temper. Wide rivers mightily flow through the deep boreal forests by fascinating orthodox wooden churches and ancient merchant towns to the White Sea. Pinewoods and shaky swamps vividly colored with cloudberry and cranberry intimately approach the tides of picturesque sandy beaches. Shifting wind rushes on stony walls of the Solovetsky monastery-fortress and forwards up to the Arctic, the land of ice and polar bears — to Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, the northern-most islands of Europe.
Culture and temper of the locals — brave explorers and sailors, calling themselves the Pomors, is formed by beautiful but rough northern nature. Here one can admire polar lights, drifting of the ice or spectacular colors of summer white nights. Marmalade and cosmetics made of sea weeds, widely known bone carving, decorated «Pomor cookie» kozulya, berry pastry kalitka, salmon, codfish and White Sea herring can become sweet after taste of your visit to the heart of the Russian North. Arkhangelsk region is the land of people, appreciating peculiarity and freedom, keeping traditions of hospitality and warmth of the Open North!
Chef Denis Karapetov from the Arkhangelsk region will present the unique Northern cuisine at the gastronomic dinner on 27 October at 19.00 at the Kontokali Bay Resort & Spa Hotel. To book a table please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org, +30 26610 99 000 (Ms Nelly van Zoest).

Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO):
“Gastronomy is one of the essences of local and regional culture. The food and drink we enjoy when we travel speaks for a place’s unique natural environment and history. It is a fundamental element of intangible heritage that creates exciting and memorable experiences for tourists.
Today, gastronomy tourism drives sustainable and inclusive economic growth. The nature of gastronomy, paired with the modern tourist’s desire for authentic experiences, presents an opportunity to create genuine and transversal tourism products that increase competitiveness and stimulate the entire value chain, from field to restaurant. Showcasing gastronomy influences modern tourists to visit unexplored destinations and fully submerge themselves into local cultures. New tourist demands have made it crucial for destinations to adapt and develop sustainable gastronomy tourism products that tell their story.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a Specialized Agency of the United Nations, works to promote sustainable tourism as a tool for fostering economic growth, social inclusion, environmental and cultural preservation, and mutual understanding. With this in mind, I encourage the global community to collaborate in the creation of sustainable and authentic gastronomy tourism experiences that can assist our sector in contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In the spirit of the Russia-Greece Tourism Year, I am pleased to see Greece and UNWTO’s Affiliate Member, the International Center of Wine and Gastronomy, collaborating to present the Russian Gastronomy Week in Greece. This initiative is an excellent example of gastrodiplomacy – gastronomy as a vehicle to promote the relations between countries. This week, we will celebrate gastronomy as a tool for fruitful international relations, unforgettable authentic experiences and potential for improving livelihoods.
I congratulate the International Center of Wine and Gastronomy and all collaborators behind the Russian Gastronomy Week in Greece for promoting collaboration through gastronomy tourism. I am confident that, by working together, we can enhance the role of gastronomy tourism as a driver of sustainable growth that maximises the potential of untapped destinations and benefits communities around the world”.
